Little Snowie Shaved Ice Machine Review

I'm pregnant (about six weeks to go!) and have been craving ice something fierce. I'm not anemic- just so hot all the time (even when I'm not pregnant)! So I decided I ought to buy a shaved ice machine to help fill my cravings and also because it would be better for my teeth.

First place I always go is to amazon to read product reviews and I'll say that for your standard run-of-the mill ice shavers, the reviews were pretty shaky. All of them seemed to be pretty hit and miss, whether you were spending $20 or $50. But when I saw this machine I choked a little bit at the price. How in the world could I justify spending $200 on a snow cone machine?? So I didn't buy it at first but when our tax return came in I decided to buy it. First of all, because it would see PLENTY of use by myself and my girls even before this baby is born. Second, because during this summer in Texas it will see use by not only my family, but my mom, and sister (and her family), aunt and uncle, and cousins, all live extremely close by and Texas summers are hot! So it will more than pay for itself just through that. The last thing that decided me was my teeth. Not only is ice chewing bad for your teeth but I have two crowns, and it's bad for your crowns too! I figured spending $200 now was a better bargain than spending hundreds to thousands of dollars later to fix my teeth, and better than wasting lots of time and money on various cheap machines that probably wouldn't work the way I wanted. It's like they say- you get what you pay for (nearly always!)

The day I got it we set it up as soon as I got home from work. I had read all the reviews so I made sure to put a towel underneath it and to make sure the cups were flush with the spout. The very first snow cone I made, I didn't have the cup placed quite right and the other reviewers are right- that sucker sprays shaved ice EVERYWHERE!! But we figured it out quickly enough. And yes the towel was invaluable. Any water or ice that escaped the cups just stayed on the towel. And when the leftover ice in the machine melted and exited the snow cone machine, it pooled at the front of the machine (just under where the cup would be) and we just used the towel to soak that up too. Perfect!

This does make snow cones FAST. I was quite impressed. It's VERY loud, but it's grinding ice, so what do you expect? And the shaved ice was just that. It was really very similar to snow. I think another reviewer said it, but you could literally pack it into a snow ball and chuck it at someone and you couldn't tell the difference between it and regular snow. Awesome! We made snow cones and everyone had flavorings with theirs except for me. I just ate mine plain and it was just what I needed. Hurray!

It also is quite sturdy and doesn't seem at all like a plastic piece of junk that will break after the first use. Of course, I haven't really put it through the wringer yet, but just based on what I've seen in only the last couple days I'm not worried.

So yes the reviews are all on the ball. Great machine, with one or two minor quirks. Definitely worth the money.

Update: One other thing to be aware of. One of the wires on the inside may shake loose, in which case the machine won't run, of course! It was a reasonably easy thing to take care of. Unscrew the top part and re-connect the wire. That was a bit fiddly because there isn't much space for fingers to get in there, but it wasn't a huge deal. I'm still plenty satisfied overall.
