LightAir IonFlow Air Purifier, Signature Review
Here's my update: i went thru THREE of these units. There is a known issue with the electrical supplies burning out. I contacted LightAIr's US office, and got two replacement units (entire units) as well as another power supply. The original power supply burned out after one month of usage, the 2nd one died after one WEEK, as did the third. at that point, with three units and one (unused) power supply left, i gave up and had the company send me shipper tickets to return all three units and the four power supplies i had. I washed my hands of dealing with this. The only upside is that i didn't pay for any of the units as i was sent the units to review. But, if i'd paid for these, i'd have been furious at how short-lived and unreliable they were.
The LightAir IonFlow 50 Signature Air Purifier is a subtle air cleaner, that works VERY quietly, but steadily pulls small particles and dust out of the air - not anywhere near as noisy as other units I've heard. The literature and brief DVD enclosed with the ionizer show inform us that it's designed to attract micro-particles - the smallest of small particles that can do the most damage if inhaled deeply into your lungs. I ran the unit in my living room for about 2 weeks, and got a fair amount of dust and micro-particles (read: black stuff that I think was in my ductwork as a result of some roofing repairs done last year) out of the air. Then, I took it to my office, an ideal place to test it some more given that it's a pretty dusty place, and after only about 3 or 4 days of running, it had attracted enough dust and particles out of the air to warrant a wipe-down of the collector (and, more than a few questions from my co-workers as to what `that thing' in my office does). The machine is filterless - it collects the particles and dust on the metal ring in the middle of the machine - it's easily cleaned off with water and a paper towel , though you need to definitely turn it off and unplug it as you will get shocked by it if you touch the ring (even if you use a dry towel). It's also so quiet, that except for the power light at the top (I ran it without illuminating the bottom `mood' lights) and the occasional tiny `pop' of ions being released from the top pins, you'd almost not realize the ionizer is even on.
It had an easy set-up out of the box and pretty good documentation ( an instruction booklet, product brochure, and a brief DVD) which I recommend looking at/reading before starting usage. If you touch the collection ring you will get a small shock (akin to a heavy static shock) so if you have pets or kids, you'll want to use the plastic guard which is included in the package (but not mandatory), which allows for air flow but keeps hands, etc. from touching the metal. I think the ionizer looks better without the guard, though, because the guard is plastic and the rest of the ionizer looks like it's made of far more durable materials. It's probably more functional for that purpose than aesthetically pleasing.
The question you're probably asking is if it's worth the money. It's not exactly the same as a fan-driven air cleaner, which handles a high volume of air and is likely a lot more noisy (but cheaper), so you'll have to decide if it fits your budget. But it definitely seems to work - I was a skeptic but became a believer the first time I cleaned the collection ring off and saw what it removed from the air.
