Cons:The ladder does not have hooks. It's screw it on, or leave it off. I wanted a removable one, so I'm disappointed that it isn't exactly as described.
The instructions have no text. It's pictures only, and that means not a lot of warning about mistakes you could make, or information on the most helpful order of assembly for each step. It's also not written for -exactly- the bed you get. The instructions have the ladder on the side instead of the foot of the bed. Watch for the pilot holes for the ladder when you're arranging the head and foot boards. Also the guard rails have a teeny tiny mark for the center rail, and you'll want to have those facing out. A ratcheting screwdriver with interchangeable heads including hex keys would have been really nice to have. I did use my own hex key, as the one provided was tearing up my hands.
The bed is solid pine, as described, and as pine, it's very soft. It will show compression dings. I damaged it slightly putting it together, but I only had me (mom) and two small children to help, not quite the two adult males pictured as required for assembly in the instructions.
The bed does come apart into two not quite identical twin beds. I wouldn't take it apart without plans to replace the thick wooden dowel that holds each leg steady. Two screws go into each dowel, so I suspect they will not have the same integrity for a second use.
The very tiny room I built this in is overwhelmed by the smell of pine now. Hoping that dissipates quickly, as it's a little bit overpowering today, less than 24 hours after putting it together.
Pros:
It is a great bunk bed for the price. Very solid. I am impressed with the quality of the hardware. I love the height of the guard rail. I have a 6 inch mattress in each bed, so plenty of rail left over.
The slats are spaced closely enough that they support the mattresses I used, which are rather flexible, inexpensive mattresses.
The cherry finish is beautiful and professional. It feels nice to run my hand over. Even the pine slats are decently sanded.
While the instructions could use improvement, assembly was fairly simple. It took me half a day, but as I mentioned, I was on my own with kids underfoot. It all went together beautifully.
It's thoughtfully packaged, so it arrived in perfect condition. The hardware was all in a jumble in a single box, rather than each type wrapped in its own plastic bag, but every piece was there.
The height from floor to bottom bunk is generous enough for a a lot of our toy tubs to fit. It looks like I could fit a trundle, even.
I had no need to call customer service, so I have no idea what they're like, but the company has an A- rating at this time.
